’m excited to announce a new partnership between myself and Lensrentals. What this means for my workshop participants is that you will be able to try out a lens of your choice during my workshops at no additional cost to you above the regular workshop tuition. This is a tremendous opportunity to try new glass. Maybe you’ve had your eye on a particular lens but wanted to test it before buying? Perhaps you want to compare your kit lens to a top tier pro lens to see if there really is a difference? Or maybe you just want to try something completely different. This is your opportunity!

There is no genre of landscape photography more demanding than wide-field astrophotography. Gathering light is paramount and wide aperture prime lenses are the very best at this. Provided by Lensrentals, you will have the chance to try out a lens of your choice during this workshop!

The Workshop:

Join me in California’s beautiful and rugged Siskiyou County for this one night two day wide-field astro photography workshop photographing the milky way over Mt. Shasta!

Learn how I capture nightscape images from start to finish during this photography workshop. Although this workshop is primarily focused on capturing wide-field astro photography images there will be opportunities for sunset photos as well.

Medium to high clearance 4WD or AWD vehicles are recommended for this workshop as the condition of the dirt roads can vary from year to year. If that is not an option for you please contact me as carpooling may be possible.

What’s included:

A guided trek to a lesser known and seldomly visited photo location. In-the-field individual instruction/guidance on composition, camera settings, focusing in the dark, etc. Demonstration on how to use simple but powerful photography apps that help you plan your night (or day) shots. Second day post processing lesson featuring simple but effective techniques on how to get the most from your night images.

What’s not included:

Transportation, lodging, meals, photo equipment, and anything not listed under the “What’s included” section above.

Who this workshop is for:

Photographers interested in learning how to capture high quality wide-field astrophotography nightscape images without special equipment. Photographers of all experience levels are welcome! It’s helpful if you have basic knowledge and understanding of your cameras operation outside of automatic mode. In general, wide angle to medium telephoto lenses are most suitable for this workshop. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your photography equipment or experience level don’t hesitate to contact me, I’m happy to help!

Physical requirements and safety:

Hiking in the dark is inherently dangerous. I do everything possible to limit risks but some simply can’t be avoided. If you are able to hike up to 1/8 mile on uneven and steep trails/terrain with your camera bag, water bottle, etc. This workshop will be within your physical abilities. In most cases we will not be far from our vehicles. You are responsible for knowing your own limits and making me aware of any health and physical concerns you may have prior to the workshop.

Once you purchase your spot on this workshop I will contact you with lodging recommendations as well as basic footwear, outwear, and equipment suggestions to ensure you will be prepared and properly equipped. A general itinerary will be provided as well but we need to remain somewhat flexible in order to best work with the conditions at hand at the time of the workshop.

Cancellation policy:

Should the attendee need to cancel/withdraw from the workshop a refund of your tuition will be issued if:

Cancellation is made more than 2 weeks before the start date of the workshop or if your spot can be filled by another attendee from the waitlist or by referral.

Equipment damage and safety:

Insurance for your camera equipment is highly encouraged. While I make every effort possible to limit the chances of equipment damage or loss, it can still happen! Oregon seascape photography is inherently hazardous.

By attending this workshop, you agree to hold Tim Hallam of Tim Hallam Photography harmless for all personal injury or loss that may occur during or in association with this workshop. This is a self-led travel trip. You are ultimately responsible for your own equipment and safety at all times.

This workshop is limited to 5 spots to ensure a good instructor to student ratio.

Licensed, bonded, insured:

As a licensed Oregon Outfitter Guide (#3205) I am CPR and First Aid certified and carry a first aid kit. The safety of the attendees is my first priority.
